Caning is not the best solution.

I am a form four Student growing up in a “caning” environment when I was a child, I did not hand in my first spelling test because there were some mistakes. So I got a punishment—teacher caned me in front of the class. Since the punishment I decided to get zero marks in all the spelling tests.

Today, I realize that I had made an extremely big mistake with my decision to give up all the spelling tests—I did not know how to write many Chinese words and had poor English vocabulary because I gave up learning.

Whenever I got canned, I felt afraid and was ashamed but it was only temporary. Sometimes I changed but most of the times, I became worse.

In Secondary School, caning is totally useless. Caning has no affected whatsoever on the students. The students today involve in many discipline problems such as play truant, wasting the whole day in the cyber cafes, go to the shopping malls for the whole day, steal, smoke, and participate in gangsterism.

We can’t change them by caning. They must change themselves. They will waste their lives because they don’t have an ambition clearly before them and so we must do some things for them to change their lives. So the things adults can do is to motivate them not cane them. How can we motivate them or show them the correct path? Here are my suggestions.
1. They must set a target to work hard, such as I must have a big house in 20 years.
2. The target can break down into short term goals. For example I must get 5As in my next year SPM Examination.
3. Tell them they can do it and must not surrender.
4. Praise more reprimanded less.
